Beverage Nostalgia

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Remember this delicious chocolate drink: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choc-Ola?
I never knew what happened to Choc-ola and why! I guess that’s Capitalism. :\

Like many, I loved the beverage and have fond childhood memories associated with it. On the way to my uncle’s property at Little Fox Lake in Brown County every weekend, I used to buy up all the Choc-ola cans from the machine outside of the little ol’ IGA. (Was it in Morgantown? Fruitdale? Daleville? Bean Blossom? I’m not exactly sure…)
I knew Choc-ola was originally bottled in my city. (The plant was right by my great grandmother’s house, actually. We passed by the building often. I recall wondering as a kid if the cow was punctured with the arrow because that was how they “milked” the drink out of him, lol!)

Well, anyway, Choc-ola is back!!! You can now sip a glass of it (yes, the original formula!) or even order gallon jugs to enjoy at home thanks to The Rock Cola Café on the east side of Indianapolis: http://www.rockcolacafe.com/.

Choc-ola > Yoo-hoo
The main difference between Choc-ola and Yoo-hoo is that Yoo-hoo uses more water, resulting in a thinner consistency and a less chocolaty flavour. It isn’t bad, per se, but it just doesn’t quite taste the same as the beloved Choc-ola. In my search for the drink, I found a recipe for it. I haven’t tried it yet, but I thought I’d share…

At-home Choc-ola Recipe (makes 1 serving):
*One 15 oz Yoo-Hoo (tall can)
* Three Tsp of Non – Dairy Coffee Creamer
—Take 7.5 oz of Yoo-Hoo (about half a tall can) and pour in a glass.
Put 3 Tsp of coffee creamer in.
Heat in microwave for about 50 sec.
Take out and stir.
Chill in freezer for 30 Minutes.
ENJOY!!!

WTF tea party?!

On Porn:

Delaware’s Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, Christine O’Donnell, wrote in “The Case for Chastity” that she knows many “physical” virgins who are not “sexually pure.”  That’s because these women look at porn, she wrote: “I know many virgins who are into pornography or who are ‘doing everything but’ with their boyfriends.”

Many Americans believe watching pornography is a sin.

On Masturbation:

Delaware’s Tea Party-backed Republican nominee for U.S. Senate Christine O’Donnell once offered her views on masturbation in an MTV documentary called “Sex In The 90s.”
As founder of “Saviors Alliance for Lifting the Truth,” O’Donnell said that the “Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery. You can’t masturbate without lust.”
Doctors say masturbation is a natural act that even children perform. Many religious people view it as sin.

On Abortion:

If a young girl is raped by her father, Tea Party favorite and Rep. Senate candidate Sharron Angle of Nevada thinks the child should not be able to have an abortion because “two wrongs don’t make a right.”
That’s what she said on the Alan Stock News radio show in June and added “Lemons can be made into lemonade.”
Angle’s world view, that life begins at conception and must be protected regardless of circumstance, is shared by many in her home state.

On Healthcare:

According to Colorado Rep. and Sen. nominee Ken Buck, the idea that some Americans don’t have access to health care is a fantasy.
“We have emergency rooms. We have charitable opportunities for folks,” Buck said on The Aaron Harber show, a weekly Denver political forum. “I don’t know how many people truly don’t have health care in this country.”
According to the CDC, 46 million Americans didnt have health insurance in 2009.

New York Senatorial candidate Carl Paladino said, during an interview on the Curtis Sliwa Show in March, that he “fears the results of Obamacare will be so horrific that it will kill more Americans through deteriorating health care than were lost on 9-11.” Therefore, said the Tea Party pick, he will ask the Attorney General to sue the federal government to reverse health care reform.

Paladino’s rhetoric speaks to the fears many Americans have about what health care reform will mean for them.
Nearly 3000 people died on 9-11.

On Social Security:

When Joe Miller, GOP nominee from Alaska, was asked by CNN’s John King if someone born today should “grow up in an America where there is not a Federal Social Security program,” Miller replied, “Absolutely.”
Miller, who was endorsed by the Tea Party, wants to “phase out” Medicare and Social Security, according to the Alaska Daily News. He also wants to get rid of the federal Department of Education, since it is not in the Constitution.
Miller and his supporters believe that it is not government’s place to take care of of citizens from cradle to grave, and that individuals and their family’s should take on more responsibility for their personal welfare.

“Carnivaluate the short and tallerate the weak”

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

So, it’s been about a week since I went to the ER and was diagnosed with gallstones. I’m doing a lot better… enough that I’ve put off the ultra-sound for the time being. (I figure there’s no sense in wracking up another bill I won’t be able to pay.) I’ve only taken 2 out of the 15 pain pills they gave me and I finish my antibiotic tomorrow. I couldn’t stick to the liquid only diet, but I have been able to eat low-fat. I did have some soul food over the weekend though. I anticipated it would kill my stomach, but I felt ok, just a little tender/uncomfortable. Moderation, I think, is going to be the key. Some people would say the upshot of my bout of illness is that I dropped another 10 lbs. (That makes a total of 37 lbs that I have lost since April, with only minor changes/effort. My current weight is 160 lbs. I guess I’ll just keep going and see what happens.)

I haven’t received the bill from the hospital yet. I’m not as freaked out about it as I was initially. It is a Catholic facility with a charity program that might be able to help me some. (Sidenote: It was really weird and off-putting to be asked at intake what religion I am. I said none of the above.) I’ll pay what I can as I can and if that doesn’t work out, bankruptcy it is then… hell, my credit score has always been in the low 400’s… I’ve never had a credit card and never will… and I came to terms with the fact that I will never own a home long ago, so… *shrug* *shrug* *shrug*

I’m spending time doing things that aren’t as stressful for me while I am on the mend. I miss camming, but when I am online a lot, I can’t avoid the temptation of looking at other things I know will upset me and jack up my blood pressure. I’m not giving up camming, but I am cutting back for my health. I need to relax more and the best way for me to do that is to disengage mentally more often. Books and Netflix are taking over for a while and I might actually start that craft project!!! :)

However, soon I need to do something I really don’t want to do before I can completely rest easily- call my parents and tell them what happened. Wish me luck. I’ll catch up with you all later. xoxo

The ER Visit

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

After the eighth day of constant searing stomach pain, I finally broke down and went to the ER. I was there from about 5:30pm to 1:00am. They took two vials of blood and offered me a morphine shot, which I turned down. Sure, I’m curious about it, but I wanted to be fully cognizant of everything they were doing and (hopefully) be able to go home afterwards. Also, narcotics make me fairly nauseous and considering I was there for stomach issues, I thought there was no need to risk further complicating things. I spent a long time laying there, watching tv- one episode of Plain Jane and two episodes of South Park. When someone finally reappeared, I got to pee in a cup. They then gave me anti-nausea meds and I drank Contrast before getting a cat scan.

Diagnosis: Gallstones. Treatment: Follow-up ultrasound in a week or two to determine whether I need my gallbladder removed via laparoscopic surgery. Cost: Astronomical for someone that is uninsured and lives paycheck to paycheck.

Although my blood pressure was kinda high (140/60) and my urine sample white cell count was high, my metabolic panel didn’t show anything unusual. Most importantly, liver function was normal, which means the gallstones aren’t blocking anything, so surgery may not be mandatory. I was running a fever of 100.4 though, which normally indicates an infection, however there was no visible evidence of infection/inflammation of my gallbladder (yet), so that’s a bit odd. They went ahead and gave me an antibiotic (Cipro) as a precaution and Lortab for pain. [Note: Surprisingly, Kroger beat out Walmart on the prescription prices by a little over a buck.] The doc suggested I try a liquid only diet if I can stand it, or at least low-fat until the pain gets better.

Today is my first day back to work. I’m feeling scared, relieved, angry, sore, tired and little bit sorry for myself. :P
